Mumbai-Kolhapur Mahalaxmi Express has been stranded since early Saturday morning with around 700 passengers on board after heavy rains flooded the tracks.
The train has been held up since 3 am between Badlapur and Vangani in Maharashtra, which is 100 kilometres away from Mumbai, a passenger on board said.
A Central Railways officer said 700 passengers were on-board the train. However, intial reports claimed around 2,000 passengers were stranded.
3:15 PM:
A special train with 19 coaches will leave from Kalyan to Kolhapur with the passengers of the stalled Mahalaxmi Express train.
All 700 passengers have been rescued and evacuated safely, says Central Railways CPRO.
2:32 PM:
More than 600 passengers have been rescued so far.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis appeals to citizens stranded on board the Mahalaxmi Express train to not worry. He has ensured that all measures and rescue operations are taken care of, roping in all expert teams from NDRF, Army, Navy, local administration, police and railways.
More 500 people have been rescued by NDRF so far including nine pregnant women.
Ambulances with 37 doctors with a gynecologist have been called in.
Evacuated passengers are being lodged at safe places from where they will be moved to Badlapur, said Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railways.
Necessary arrangements like food and water are being made at Sahyadri Mangal Karyalay in Badlapur.
Fourteen buses, three tempos have been arranged for further movement.
1:25 PM:
The Navy deployed eight rescue teams within 40 minutes of the first call. These teams included flood relief teams and divers. The teams were moving by road.
A team of railway officials, RPF and medicos headed by ADRM NP Singh 8828119001 is available at Badlapur station. A relief train for movement of passengers is available at Badlapur. Medical assistance and refreshments have also been arranged.
Further arrangements to move passengers up to Kolhapur are being ensured.
